Giiyong Bangari (Welcome Sun) – a children’s story

Rocky Hall Preschool storybook ‘Giiyong Bangari’ ( Welcome Sun) is a children’s story book and accompanying video written in Yuin language of the South Coast of New South Wales.

Provisionally called South Coast Language as spoken by Elders, it is based on recordings of fifty-four Elders from Eden to Port Kembla.

Rocky Hall Preschool is nestled in the Towamba Valley in Thaua Country in the Yuin Nation, on the Far South Coast of New South Wales. The school was built in 1887.

Wombat (banggadaan) is part of our history and our story. Wombat has trodden the landscape for millennia and she has adapted to share her home with us at the preschool.

She can be found in summer enjoying the soft cool sand in the sandpit or hiding in the rainbow cubby.

Each child has chosen an animal identity they connect with; they take their name and responsibility for the care of the animal and its habitat.

You will find each animal within the pages of the book and you can hear the children speaking their animal name in this video.
